Why buy “not Apple”?

In my last blog post, I discussed the Apple Ecosystem and how it gets people to buy Apple. Now, let’s see why one should buy a Windows device. A huge proportion of all laptops/PC’s are Windows. Clearly, many people are using it, why should you? Here are a few reasons-

Price– On average, PC’s are priced lower than Macs with similar specs. Moreover, if you want a Computer (rather than a laptop), it is relatively easy to build your own PC. This allows you to spend how much you want on specific parts, and save on others. But the general statement of Windows being cheaper than Mac is not necessarily true for higher-end devices. But that doesn’t affect the common buyer. And, if you know exactly what you want, Apple might be cheaper for you, but it’s rare. So, as far as most people are concerned, PC’s are cheaper than Macs

Variety- Let’s face it, Apple launches about 2-3 new models (with various specs) each year. If you live in India, you cannot customize each and every aspect of an Apple device. Hence, you’re stuck with whatever configuration sellers choose to sell. For example, if you want an Intel i7/i9 processor in a 13 inch laptop, you cannot get that configuration in India (in fact, Apple does not make an i9 in a 13 inch chassis at all). Whereas, you’ll find so many laptops with the same specification, over on the Windows side. And, if you want an AMD processor, Apple does not make any devices with AMD (If you’re unsure about the difference between the two, don’t worry, most people are. I will be writing about that soon).

Also, like I mentioned before, you have hundreds of more options if you build your own PC. Doing this sounds too advanced, but it’s not. Watch a couple of videos on YouTube, and you’ll see it’s more like putting pieces together. A really fun channel I recommend is Linus Tech Tips(This is the link to their PC Builds playlist)

Another point brought up by a tech YouTuber, Dave Lee, is that if one year, Apple’s lineup sucks, and you’re planning to buy an Apple laptop that year, you either wait till the next year’s release, or buy the shitty device and live with it. This has happened since the last few years. But, if you want to buy Windows, you have a whole host of options waiting for you. So, overall, Windows has more variety than Apple.

Upgradability- While this mostly applies to Computers (as opposed to laptops), it also applies to a few laptops. If you have a CPU, and it’s working slow. Swap out the motherboard, or the chip, or the ram, or add a graphics card, or get better cooling. There are so many things one can do before they need to buy an entirely new CPU. You can get better keyboards, mice, and monitors. Heck, get multiple monitors. None of this is possible with an Apple device (to be fair, most of this isn’t possible in most Windows laptops as well. But if you need any of this, you need to rule out Apple).

Gaming– One of the most commonly stated reasons is, “If you wanna do gaming. Go for Windows”. That is spot on. The Steam library on MacOS is spittle when compared to Windows. But mainly, Windows PCs and Laptops have dedicated gaming components, and models which will definitely perform better than Macs. And often, are still the cheaper of the two.

So, in an attempt to be fair towards Windows, that was my list of reasons to buy a Windows PC.
